5 Signs Your Dog’s Immune System Needs Support
Share
(And What You Can Do About It)
It’s that time of year again.
The mornings are darker, the air has a bite, and in my house, one by one, the kids and my husband have gone down with sniffles and sore throats. I’ve been on defense mode — pounding ginger, tossing back vitamin C, and eating my weight in mandarine oranges trying to stay healthy.
Somewhere between wiping noses and blending immune-boost smoothies, it hit me: if the change of season hits us this hard, what about our dogs? It had honestly never occurred to me that my dog’s immune system might need a little seasonal support too.
As a Canine Nutritionist, I know that now — but a few years ago, I didn’t.
When my sweet Bucky got sick, I realized how little I understood about what keeps a dog truly healthy. I thought love, exercise, and the occasional “good quality” kibble were enough. That experience changed everything for me.
Since then, I’ve learned how powerful food is — not just for people, but for our dogs too.
Your dog’s immune system is their internal defense team — protecting against infection, inflammation, and even chronic disease. And just like ours, it can get run-down by stress, toxins, poor diet, and lack of sleep or exercise. If it’s overworked or under-nourished, you’ll start to see subtle changes that can snowball into bigger problems later.
Here are five tell-tale signs your dog’s immune system might need some love — and what you can do to help.
1. They’re getting sick more often or taking longer to recover
If your dog seems to catch every cough going around the park, or if small wounds take forever to heal, their immune system may be struggling. A 2019 study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science showed that dogs with nutrient-rich, antioxidant-dense diets had significantly stronger immune responses to infection than those on standard processed diets.
💡 What to do:
Focus on real, whole foods. Nutrients like vitamin A (pumpkin), vitamin C (sweet potato, beets), and vitamin E (flaxseed, sunflower seeds) help cells repair and defend. Think of them as your dog’s version of those mandarine oranges I’ve been inhaling.

2. Their coat looks dull or flaky
A shiny coat starts from the inside out. When the immune system is off balance, the body diverts nutrients to essential organs first, leaving skin and coat low on the priority list. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc play key roles in skin health and immune regulation.
💡 What to do:
Add flaxseed or chia to your dog’s meals — both are plant-based sources of omega-3s. Coconut oil can also help soothe inflammation from the inside. A well-fed immune system gives that glossy, healthy-dog look we all love.
3. They seem tired or “off” lately
You know your dog’s normal energy. When they suddenly start napping more, skipping playtime, or just seem flat, that’s your clue. Chronic fatigue is often the immune system’s quiet cry for help — it’s working overtime.
💡 What to do:
Support recovery and resilience with complex carbohydrates (like oats and sweet potatoes) that provide steady energy, plus B-vitamins for cellular repair. And don’t forget mental health — stress and boredom suppress immunity too. Regular walks, sniffing adventures, and enrichment games do wonders.

4. Their digestion is all over the place
About 70% of a dog’s immune system lives in the gut. If you’ve noticed recurring tummy upsets, soft stools, or random vomiting, it could mean their gut microbiome — the bacteria army that supports immunity — is out of balance.
💡 What to do:
Feed a diverse diet with natural prebiotics like pumpkin, oats, and flaxseed to fuel healthy bacteria. Avoid ultra-processed foods that contain fillers and additives, which can harm gut flora. A healthy gut = a stronger immune system.
5. They’re itchy, inflamed, or have recurring skin issues
Excessive itching, ear infections, or paw licking often point to immune overreaction — basically, the body treating harmless triggers as threats. Chronic inflammation can wear the immune system down over time.
💡 What to do:
Look for anti-inflammatory nutrients such as beta-carotene (in sweet potatoes and carrots) and antioxidants from beets and coconut. These help calm the immune response and strengthen the body’s natural defenses.
So what can you do — starting today?
The good news is you don’t have to overhaul your dog’s entire diet overnight. Simple, consistent choices make the biggest difference.
- Prioritize fresh, real ingredients. Whole foods deliver the vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients your dog’s immune system craves.
- Keep them hydrated. Just like us, dehydration stresses the immune system.
- Get outside. Moderate sunlight supports vitamin D production and mood — both linked to immunity
- Let them rest. Sleep is when the body repairs and strengthens defenses.
-
Add in daily immune-supportive treats.
That last one is my favorite — because it’s the easiest.
When I created my Immune Boost Treats, I wanted them to be more than just a reward. They’re a mix of four vegan, nutrient-rich favorites:
- Bananutty Sunflower Snackers: packed with vitamin E and healthy fats for cellular defense.
- Beetroot Bliss: full of antioxidants and natural nitrates that support circulation and detoxification.
- Sweet Puptato Coconut Crispies: loaded with beta-carotene, fiber, and healthy coconut oil for gut and skin health.
- Pumpkin Oat Pawsome Bites: rich in fiber, zinc, and vitamin A to balance digestion and strengthen immunity.
Each one is handmade in small batches using human-grade ingredients — because our dogs deserve real food too. And yes, they taste amazing (according to Ciccio’s very enthusiastic taste-testing).
Adding one or two of these a day is like giving your dog’s body a gentle high-five — a little daily defense against whatever’s going around.
The bottom line
A healthy immune system doesn’t just mean fewer colds or infections. It means fewer vet visits, faster recovery, more energy, and that bright, happy sparkle in your dog’s eyes.
We can’t protect them from everything, but we can give them the nutrition and care that helps their bodies do what they’re designed to do — stay strong, balanced, and thriving.
So while you’re pouring yourself another cup of ginger tea and peeling yet another mandarine, take a moment for your dog too. Their immune system deserves a little boost this season — one healthy bite at a time.
